![]() Besides damaging your lips, lip biting can cause many dental complications. Some people may even accidentally bite into their lips while chewing food. Biting Your Lips Causes Poor Oral HealthIf you bite your lips when you chew food, it could be an indication of a misaligned bite. A misaligned bite poses a serious problem because it can damage your teeth. When a person with a good bite chews food, the pressure of their bite distributes evenly across all of their teeth. A misaligned bite puts more pressure on fewer teeth. This has a chance to chip or break teeth over time. Fortunately, there are many ways to correct a misaligned bite. Another reason biting your lips is bad for your oral health has to do with your jaw muscle. When you bite your lip, you must move your jaw forward in an unnatural position. Doing this over and over again can cause the muscles that help open and close your jaw to become fatigued. While it may not seem like a serious problem, this could lead to a condition called TMD. TMD is a condition affecting the jaw muscles below your ear and can be very painful to deal with. The final reason lip biting may cause oral health problems is the formation of sores inside the mouth. Many people who bite their lip bit the backside of their lip. If this happens, there's a chance to cause a wound to open inside the mouth. Wounds inside the mouth are difficult to deal with and have a high chance of infection, which is why it's important to stop biting your lip as soon as possible.
