Times When a Nighttime Mouthguard Could Help Your Mouth

Times When a Nighttime Mouthguard Could Help Your MouthWhen suffering from a sleep disorder such as bruxism, or OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) the solution you've been searching for just could be a mouthguard specially made for you by our dental office.

Bruxism is the term used by the medical community to define when you grind or clench your teeth so hard that it causes damage. Sometimes you don't even realize you do it while you are sleeping.

Patients with Bruxism can suffer from numerous dental issues, including - tooth damage, loosing teeth, tooth sensitivity, chipping their teeth, and enamel loss. The pain is significant and happens in all areas of the neck, face, jaw and around the eyes. They might also have trouble with their jaw movements and experience a lot of fatigue.

OSA is another chronic disorder that can be treated with a mouthguard.  This nighttime chronic issue is linked to strokes, heart disease, depression and a wealth of other medical conditions.  This can last from a few seconds to more than a minute. A loud snort or choking sound commences, when normal breathing is resumed, after muscles relax more than they should.

A Mouthguard is Used to Treat Both

In the case of the mouthguard for bruxism, the guard works similar to how a retainer would.  There are two pieces of plastic that prevent the teeth from grinding together by covering the top and bottom teeth. In the case of the mouthguard for OSA, the guard is also worn at night, but fits in the mouth similar to what a sports mouthguard would. The mouthguard works to keep the airway open, so it holds the lower jaw forward enough to keep the jaw open – this prevents the tongue and throat muscles from collapsing and this way there is no airway blockage preventing smooth breathing.
