Saliva works with your mouth to help wash bacteria and other food particles out of your mouth and down your throat. You might think of saliva as a bacteria-fighting tool.
Without saliva, bacteria could grow on your teeth and gums, which is not a good thing. The growth of bacteria leads directly to tooth decay and gum disease. Gum disease, if it is caught early and treated, can be cured. However, if it is missed, it can cause additional infections, loss of teeth, and gum tissue destruction, which can even alter your jawbone.
