The Leading Causes of Dry Mouth

Posted on 12/21/2020 by Office
The Leading Causes of Dry MouthDry mouth is an increasingly growing problem seen in many dental practices across the country. There could be a number of contributing factors to this condition. Sometimes it is something as minor as snoring or sleeping with your mouth open and a simple snore guard may help. Other times it might be a toothpaste with special ingredients or whitening solution that may affect certain individuals this way. It may also be a sign of other, more serious concerns.

Various Health Conditions

There are many diseases or illnesses that can lead to dry mouth in some patients. Diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, autoimmune disorders such as HIV, AIDS or Sjogren's syndrome, and multiple others could all cause dry mouth and other similar dental issues. It is also not only the illnesses themselves that can bring about this oral health concern, but many times the medications can produce dry mouth as a side effect.

Tobacco and Alcohol Use

The common practices of smoking and drinking alcohol are also known to cause dry mouth. The nicotine in cigarettes reduces the production of saliva while alcohol consumption redistributes fluids throughout the body and can lead to dehydration.

Gum Disease

Finally, an undiagnosed or untreated gum condition such as gingivitis or periodontal disease can also be a major contributor to dry mouth. The various bacteria can inhibit the production and flow of saliva. The thing about gum disease is that depending on the case, it can be a symptom of dry mouth or the cause. Either way, dry mouth and gum disease should both be dealt with immediately.

Dry mouth is no minor concern that should be ignored. If you are experiencing issues with this type of condition, simply get in touch with our clinic and our dental health professionals will be glad to help you take care of the problem.
