Dental crowns are a restorative dental procedure that gives your tooth full function, but also play a cosmetic role in your life. If you are unhappy with the look, shape, or structure of your tooth, the expert dentists at Magnolia Modern Dentistry can help you restore your tooth, while keeping your natural tooth roots in place.
What are Dental Crowns?
As the name suggests, dental crowns cover the top of your tooth. If you have issues such as a severely chipped, cracked, or decayed tooth, a dental crown may help its appearance. Before we can place a crown, we must treat the underlying issue, though.
For example, if you have a large amount of decay in the tooth, first we must remove the decay before we can crown the tooth. If you have a chipped or cracked tooth, we may need to reshape the tooth so that the crown lays properly on its surface, giving you the look you desire.
We offer crowns in a variety of materials, depending on the area of the mouth (front or back) and the look you desire. Most commonly, we administer resin crowns. This tooth-colored material blends in with the rest of the mouth so that no one can tell that you have a tooth restoration. Sometimes we place alloy or gold crowns on posterior teeth too, but both are a more obvious material.
How Crowns Help You
If you have issues with your teeth that make eating difficult or that cause self-esteem issues when talking, eating, or smiling, crowns can help. Unlike other restorations, such as dental bonding and veneers, crowns offer a very durable surface, especially in your posterior teeth where a majority of your chewing takes place.
Crown can even out damaged teeth, provide stable chewing surfaces for infected or decayed teeth, and give your mouth an even appearance. Dental crowns restore your tooth to its full function, allowing you to keep your natural tooth’s roots to keep stimulating your jawbone and keeping your gum tissue healthy.
The crown process takes at least two appointments. The first appointment is when our dentists prepare your mouth to accept the crown. We take care of any damage, such as infection or decay. We also reshape the tooth to get it ready to accept the crown.
Once the area is ready, we take impressions of the tooth to send to our lab. The technicians use the impressions to create a crown that is just for you. It will match the color of your other teeth and have the perfect shape so that it looks just like the teeth around it.
Once we receive your crown, you come in for your second appointment. Our dentists will place the crown temporarily, looking at its fit and ensuring your comfort. We will make any necessary adjustments at this time before making the crown a permanent part of your mouth.
