Fillings have a bad reputation. Patients hear the word and think that they did something wrong. At Magnolia Modern Dentistry, we want you to know that fillings are actually a good thing. They help you keep your natural tooth longer, despite the decay or trauma the tooth experienced. Keeping your natural tooth is the best way to keep the structure of your mouth intact and enhance your overall oral health.
Our dentists provide a gentle filling procedure that helps restore your damaged tooth and gives you a longer life out of it. We do not want patients to be afraid of the procedure, just ask us any questions that you have before we do it and our staff will gladly answer them for you.
What are Fillings?
Fillings come in two types – amalgam (silver) or resin (tooth-colored). Silver fillings are probably the ones you are most familiar with as that is all dentists used for many years. This option does have its benefits, despite the obviousness of the silver material in your mouth. Large cavities often need silver fillings to keep the tooth intact.
Resin fillings, on the other hand, are tooth-colored. No one will be able to tell that you have them because they blend in with the rest of your mouth. They offer a great amount of strength to the tooth, not to mention help patients feel more self-confident when they laugh or smile, as no one will know the difference.
Does it Hurt?
This is something many people worry about – the pain. Our dentists are experts at providing the gentlest dental procedures possible. Most patients walk out wondering what they were afraid of in the first place.
We start by numbing the area with a topical solution – no needles yet! This gets your mouth ready to receive anesthetic, but you will not feel the needles. The anesthetic properly numbs the area so that you will not feel the drills that take out the decay or reshape the tooth. The good news is that with resin fillings, we have to remove even less of the tooth’s enamel, making the procedure even less invasive.
Once you are numb, our dentists carefully remove any decayed or damaged area of the tooth. The hardest part is then done! All that is left is to fill the tooth with either silver or resin material and let it set. Once set, you have a healed tooth with your natural roots intact.
You can typically go about your normal routine right after the procedure. Our dentists will discuss the proper aftercare depending on the type of filling you received and the rest of the day is yours to enjoy. Fillings are a minor procedure that can literally save the life of your tooth.
