Are you worried about how you will replace your missing teeth? If you do not want dentures, you do not have to worry, at Magnolia Modern Dentistry we have other tooth replacement options, including dental implants. This realistic tooth replacement option helps you replace your teeth and feel as if you never lost your natural teeth in the first place.
What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants may look similar to other artificial tooth options that you have seen. The ‘fake’ tooth looks the same no matter what procedure you choose. What differs with dental implants, though, is how the tooth is placed in your mouth. You cannot remove dental implants, but that is a good thing. Implants have ‘roots’. While they are artificial, they help your mouth feel as if you still have your natural teeth.
The implant part of dental implants is a titanium screw. We surgically place the screws in your mouth where you once had teeth. We do this after your mouth completely heals from the extraction process. Once placed, the titanium screws fuse with your jawbone, becoming a part of your mouth. This now stimulates the jawbone, encouraging it to keep growing. Without the titanium screws, the jawbone would not have any stimulation, which would cause it to shrink, causing your facial structure to change.
The Artificial Tooth
Once the titanium screws fuse with your mouth, which takes several weeks, our dentists can place an abutment on it. The abutment is what holds the fake tooth on the implant. Once all pieces are in place, we can then place the artificial tooth, whether dentures or bridges. The teeth lie over the implant, becoming a permanent part of your mouth. You now have a set of teeth that look and act like your natural teeth.
The Benefits of Implants
Dental implants have many benefits, one of which is the cosmetic appearance. You do not have to worry about your implants slipping or causing an issue with your speech. No one will know that you have artificial teeth in your mouth because you will be able to do everything you used to do with your natural teeth.
Implants also help your jawbone stay strong. If you have ever seen someone ‘older’ with a sagging face, chances are he or she does not have implants and the jawbone shrunk. This causes the face to change its structure. The jawbone requires the stimulation of the tooth’s roots, or in this case, the titanium screws, to stimulate it for growth.
Can you Get Implants?
You need to have good oral health in order to get dental implants. This means a healthy jawbone and healthy gum tissue. If you have advanced gum disease or certain medical conditions, you may not be a good candidate. Our dentists can go over the conditions with you to help you decide if dental implants are the right choice or if you need a different tooth replacement option, which we can help you with too.
