Mouthguard for Sports
Does your child play sports? Do you protect their mouth while playing? If you do not, you are not alone. Many parents worry about protecting their child’s body with appropriate gear, but forget about the dangers of damage to the teeth. At Magnolia Modern Dentistry, we help our patients get the proper sports mouthguard to ensure a safe and healthy mouth.
What Sports Need a Mouthguard?
You may think that the sport your child plays is not dangerous enough to require a mouthguard, but it may be. Even non-contact sports have ways of causing damage to the mouth. Think of baseball – it is a non-contact sport, right? What could go wrong? A few things could happen – a ball could fly straight to your child’s mouth, and a bat could do the same thing. What about players sliding into a base and his or her cleat hitting your child’s mouth, as that could cause damage too? All of these issues put your child’s oral health at risk.
Of course, the contact sports are a no-brainer. Football, hockey, and wrestling are the most common sports that people think of, but even soccer and basketball are good sports to think of wearing a mouthguard. A properly fitted guard can keep your child’s teeth in place, protect his or her mouth from serious cuts and injuries, and may even help lower the risk of a concussion.
How we Fit for Sports Mouthguards
We hear from a lot of patients about getting a mouthguard over the counter. While this option is available, it is not a good one. The over-the-counter mouth protection is a one-size-fits-all approach. What you see is what you get. How do you know it will fit your child’s mouth? Remember, we are going for good protection here. A loose mouth protector will not provide much more protection than not wearing one at all.
The process is simple, though. After an exam, our dentists will take impressions of your child’s mouth. This is completely non-invasive. It is a mold that we send to our lab so that our technicians can create a custom mouthguard for your child. The mouth protector will snugly fit in your child’s mouth so that his or her teeth have the proper protection.
You will need to come in for two appointments with us. The first is to get your child measured for the mouth protection. The second occurs after we receive the mouthguard and can check its fit in your child’s mouth. We ensure that your child is completely comfortable with the fit so that the chances of him or her wearing it as we prescribe increases.
